RUSTON, La. — WKU Baseball got six innings of one-run relief from a trio of freshmen arms, but an early deficit was too much to overcome as Louisiana Tech took the second game of the weekend series, 7-1. Hunter Wood had his 13th multi-hit game of the season, while Thomas Peter added his team-best 16th with the team's lone run batted in Saturday night.
The Bulldogs scored four in the first inning, capped by a three-run Chase Lunsford homerun, and another two in the second frame. After that, however, the home team was stymied into six zeroes on the end of the line score Saturday night.
Bailey Sutton got it started, taking 48 pitches to blank LA Tech for three frames. It was the longest scoreless outing of the Louisville native's young career thus far, as he struck out three in the appearance. Brett Vansant followed with a zero in the sixth, then it was Michael Hicks with a 1-2-3 bottom half of the seventh.
WKU added one in the sixth, as Bryson Smith looped his second double of the year into center field and scored when Peter grounded a ball past the shortstop.
Hicks allowed a seventh and final Bulldogs run in the eighth, while their starter Nate Harris finished out his third complete game of the season on 113 pitches.
Play of the Day
To begin the third inning, Kevin Lambert dove to his right and snagged a liner off the bat of Jonathan Washam. It was the first batter faced for Bailey Sutton, who was able to work comfortably with no baserunners after the play by his shortstop followed by a leaping catch at the center field wall by Colie Currie in the next at-bat.
What's Up Next
The Hilltoppers hope to take the final game of the series Sunday with first pitch at J.C. Love Field at 1 p.m. Following fishy weather Saturday forcing alterations to the desired doubleheader, the precipitation appears to be finished in Ruston for the weekend... Knock on wood!
