MALIBU, Calif. –Elpida Malamou was the first ever Lady Topper to represent WKU at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Malamou competed amongst the most elite collegiate tennis players in the country including her two opponents who were both ranked in the top-125 ITA preseason rankings.
Play for Malamou began by facing No. 117 Elise Van Heuvlen from Iowa in the first round of the All-American Championships. Van Heuvlen defeated Malamou in the first set 6-3, but the Ioannina, Greece, native responded with a victorious second set and score of 6-4. Malamou fell to Van Heuvlen in the third set, losing 6-0.
The graduate student then went head to head against top collegiate competitor No. 89 Sophie Whittle of Gonzaga. The Lady Topper fought a hard battle, but was ultimately defeated 6-1, 6-3.
Malamou will team up with the Red and White later this week to host opponents on The Hill. Action will take place on October 6 and 7 at the WKU Tennis Complex.
