BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The WKU (6-4) women's tennis team defeated Chattanooga (7-5) 4-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the WKU Tennis Complex, snapping the Mocs' seven-match winning streak.
The Lady Toppers started out the match winning the doubles point with victories at all three spots. Andreanna Christopoulou and Cynthia Melita Setyawan teamed up at No. 1 and handed Kayla Jones and Kelsey Coots their first loss in eight matches by a 6-1 score. Christopoulou and Melita Setyawan are now 5-0 on the season as a pair and have played all five matches at the No. 1. Tereza Hejlova and Violetta Shatalova paired up for only the second time this season at No. 2 and earned a 6-4 win. Elpida Malamou and Gabby Crofford won 6-3 at the No. 3.
Christopoulou defended the No. 1 spot in singles play for the fourth match this season and picked up a huge win over Kayla Jones. Christopoulou got down early, losing the first set 3-6 but bounced back to win the next two sets to clinch the match for WKU. Jones had a 7-1 record this season for Chattanooga in singles and has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week twice this season. With the win, Christopoulou improves to 8-2 on the season, marking her 20th win as a Lady Topper. Melita Setyawan bounced back from her first loss of the season against Louisiana-Lafayette with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3. Malamou improved her team-best 9-1 record with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4. Cassie Pennington and Shatalova suffered losses at the No. 5 and No. 6. Hejlova was leading at the No. 2 spot when the match was clinched.
The 4-2 win over Chattanooga was the first WKU victory in the series history. The Lady Toppers were previously 0-6 against the Mocs including last season's 0-4 loss played in Chattanooga.
WKU will be in action on Saturday against Arkansas State (0-9). The Lady Toppers defeated Arkansas State last season 5-2 in Bowling Green, but have a 3-8 series record overall against the Red Wolves.
