NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The WKU women's tennis team defeated Lipscomb 5-2 on the road on Friday night at the Whitworth Indoor Center in Nashville, Tenn. The Lady Toppers improve to 1-2 on the season.
WKU took the doubles point to get things started on Friday with wins at the one and two spots. Elpida Malamou and Andreanna Christopoulou were able to get a 6-4 win and Tereza Hejlova and Violetta Shatalova won 6-4 also.
Hejlova defended the top spot in singles and won convincingly 6-4, 6-2. Malamou played at the No. 2 for the first time this season. She got down early, losing the first set 6-1, but came back to win the match with a 6-4 win in the second set and a 7-5 win in the third. No. 114-ranked (ITA) Christopoulou continued her perfect record in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the third spot. Beatriz Gutierrez Cerezo made her WKU debut at No. 4, but lost a close match 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. Shatalova won the final point for the Lady Toppers with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5. Cassie Pennington dropped her match in the sixth spot 6-3, 6-2.
The Lady Toppers are back in action on Feb. 13 in Richmond, Ky. taking on Eastern Kentucky (2-2) and then on Feb. 14 against Ball State (2-1) in Muncie, Ind.
