RICHMOND, Ky. -- The WKU women's tennis team picked up its second consecutive win of the season against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday in Richmond at the Greg Adams Tennis Center. With the 4-3 win, the Lady Toppers improve to 2-2 on the season while EKU drops to 3-3.
The Lady Toppers claimed the doubles point to begin the match with victories across the board. Andreanna Christopoulou and Cynthia Melita Setyawan captured a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. Tereza Hejlova and Elpida Malamou took care of business at the No. 2 spot with a 6-0 win. Violetta Shatalova and Beatriz Gutierrez Cerezo earned a 6-3 win to round doubles play at the No. 3.
With the doubles point secured, WKU took to singles getting wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots. Malamou, Shatalova and Melita Setyawan picked up the wins for the Lady Toppers. Shatalova is now 3-0 on the season in singles play and Malamou improved to 3-1.
WKU recorded its first win over Eastern Kentucky since Feb. 17, 2002 when the Lady Toppers won a 4-2 match in Richmond. The Lady Toppers had lost the last six matches to the Colonels.
WKU hits the road again on Sunday to take on Ball State in Muncie, Ind. at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center at 1:00 p.m. (CT). WKU last faced Ball State in 2002 in a match the Lady Toppers lost 6-1. The Cardinals are 3-1 on the season and are coming off of two wins last weekend against Detroit Mercy and Valparaiso.
