MUNCIE, Ind. -- The WKU women's tennis team closed out the weekend with a tough 5-2 loss at Ball State on Sunday at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Lady Toppers fall to 2-3 on the season and the Cardinals improve to 4-2.
WKU started the match down a point after dropping the doubles decision. Tereza Hejlova and Elpida Malamou were beaten 6-3 at the No. 2 spot, while Cassie Pennington and Violetta Shatalova dropped a 6-1 match at the No. 3. Andreanna Christopoulou and Cynthia Melita Setyawan were up 5-1 when the other two matches came to a close.
The Lady Toppers quickly evened the score with a win at the No. 5 in singles. Melita Setyawan topped Julia Sbircea in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to bring the score to 1-1 overall. The Cardinals took the lead again when Peyton Gollhofer secured a 6-1, 6-2 win against Andreanna Christopoulou. At the No. 6 spot, Beatriz Gutierrez Cerezo fell 6-2, 6-3. Ball State clinched the win with a victory at No. 1 against Hejlova. Shatalova also was unable to get a win, suffering a 6-3, 6-4 loss at the No. 4 spot.
Elpida Malamou continued her winning streak with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 3. Malamou is now 4-1 on the season with three-straight wins over opponents from Ball State, Eastern Kentucky and Lipscomb.
The Lady Toppers will take to the court again on Feb. 20 when they travel to face Murray State.
