NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The WKU women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 win in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday night against Belmont at the Brentwood Swim and Tennis Club. The Lady Toppers improve to 4-3 on the season while Belmont drops to 2-5.
WKU jumped out to a hot start with victories across the board in doubles. Andreanna Christopoulou and Cynthia Meltia Setyawan teamed up at the No. 1 and earned a 7-5 win. Christoupoulou and Melita Setyawan are now 3-0 on the season as a duo. Tereza Hejlova and Elpida Malamou were the No. 2 pair and they won convincingly with a 6-0 score. Hejlova and Malamou are now 3-1 this season together. Gabby Crofford and Violetta Shatalova secured the No. 3 spot and captured a 6-2 win.
The Lady Toppers picked up wins at all but one spot in singles. Hejlova defended the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Christopoulou played at the No. 2 and won 6-2, 6-0. Malamou continued her winning streak with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 3. She is now 6-1 on the season and has won five straight. Melita Setyawan kept her perfect record with a 6-1, 6-0 win. She is now 4-0 this season in singles play. Shatalova had a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5. Cassie Pennington had a close match at No. 6 that took three sets to decide and went into extra points in the second set. Pennington came up on the short end with a 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-3 loss.
WKU will next be in action on Friday, March 4 against Austin Peay (1-3) at 3:00 p.m. in Clarksville, Tenn.
