CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- The WKU women's tennis team picked up a 7-0 win at Austin Peay on Friday to improve to 5-3 on the season. Austin Peay drops to 1-4. The Lady Toppers have now won three-straight matches with wins over Murray State, Belmont and now the Govs.
WKU won the doubles point to start the match with wins at all three spots. At No. 1 Andreanna Christopoulou and Cynthia Melita Setyawan topped Lidia Yanes Garcia and Brittney Covington 7-5. The duo improve to 4-0 on the season in doubles. Tereza Hejlova and Elpida Malamou blanked Hannah Tatlock and Helena Kuppig at the No. 2, 6-0. Violetta Shatalova and Gabby Crofford rounded out doubles play with a 7-5 win.
With a 1-0 advantage, WKU went into the singles portion of the match and took care of business. Christopoulou defended the No. 1 spot for the second time this season and picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win to improve to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 at the No. 1. Hejlova won in three sets at the No. 2 to move her record to 5-3 this year. Malamou continues her winning streak, now at six matches, with a three-set win at No. 3. Melita Setyawan keeps her perfect record with a win in straight sets, moving to 5-0 this season. Shatalova also won in straight sets to improve to 6-1 on the season. Beatriz Gutierrez Cerezo picked up her first win this season at the No. 6 over Isabela Jovanovic 6-1, 6-3. Overall, WKU is 30-17 in singles play this season.
The 7-0 win was the first shutout for WKU since a 6-0 win over Tennessee State on April 4, 2014. The three-match winning streak is the longest streak since the Lady Toppers stringed together four wins in 2013.
WKU will use the break from classes next week to play three matches on the road in Louisiana. The Lady Toppers travel to take on Louisiana-Lafayette on March 8, Nicholls State on March 10 and Louisiana-Monroe on March 11.
