AUBURN, Ala.. -- WKU used stellar performances from sophomores Carleigh Chaumont and Hannah Parker in order to earn a split Friday afternoon in the Lady Toppers' opening day of the 2016 season. WKU opened its season with an 8-4 victory over Appalachian State before falling to No. 4 Auburn, 19-1, in the nightcap.
GAME 1: WKU 8, APPALACHIAN STATE 4 (7 INN.)
Chaumont and Parker teamed up to lead the Lady Toppers in WKU's 8-4 victory over Appalachian State. Parker excelled both in the circle and at the plate, turning in a career-best six strikeouts and adding a career-high three RBI. Chaumont finished 2-for-4 at the plate, including her first career triple, as the sophomore also added an RBI.
WKU knocked in runs in four of its six innings of play and finished with a total of 10 hits. Sophomore Jordan Mauch finished 2-for-3 at the plate while freshman Bryce Holmgren also added a pair of hits to go along with two RBI. Junior Kathryn Downing had a solid outing for WKU, finishing 2-for-3.
Parker (1-0) earned her first victory on the year and seventh of her career while Downing was credited with the save.
GAME 2: AUBURN 19, WKU 1 (5 INN.)
Fourth-ranked Auburn (2-0) proved to be too much for the Lady Toppers in the day's nightcap as WKU recorded a total of seven errors and 12 walks to allow the Tigers to score their 19 runs on just seven hits.
Auburn's no-hit attempt was broken up in the fourth inning thanks a Bryce Holmgren's RBI single. In her first two games of her collegiate career, Holmgren produced a total of three hits and three RBI.
The Lady Toppers return to action Saturday morning as WKU (1-1) is set for a 10 a.m. CT contest with Butler (2-0) at AU's Jane B. Moore Field.
