WKU Head Coach Jeff Brohm Quotes
Opening Statement
"We're definitely excited and happy about the win. I thought our guys had a great week of practice. Our players, our coaches were on edge all week. We were ticked off about the loss we had and the way we lost it, but we understand that's football so it was back to work. We worked on the fundamentals. We wanted to correct the problems we had, and to come out in the first half and play that well, I couldn't be happier. We executed, took shots on offense and made them, the defense played well and got turnovers and stops. Special teams played well. So, to play a first half of that caliber, I couldn't be prouder of our team in the first half and the way they worked all week to get that done."
On winning a game with a large margin
"It doesn't normally happen. Normally our games go down to the very end and it was a little different. But, it's good to get one of those every now and then. Like I said, our guys just executed well, came out hungry, made plays and everybody played well."
"Well, there's a few things he can do well. One of them, he can go deep and you can throw it up there to him. He kind of has a second gear, where when the ball is in the air, he's going to turn on a second gear and find a way to make the play. For him to catch as many deep balls as he has lately is a testament to his talent, his skill level. The thing he can do is accelerate when the ball is in the air and go run it down. That's a great quality to have as a receiver."
On Garrett Schwettman becoming WKU's career scoring leader
"He's very consistent. He's a guy that, if you give him a shot, he's going to put it in there. He works hard at his trade and he deserves all the credit."
On moving back into conference play
"Our guys understand that now we are going into conference play. Our conference is tough. We were 3-5 or 4-4 [WKU was 4-4 in C-USA play last season] last season, I can't remember, but we didn't play as well as we could've. But, those are good football teams and I feel like the conference is the same way. There's a lot of parity. We're going to have to play well in order to win. All three segments are going to have to play well to get it done. I think in this game, in the second half, the head coach took the pedal off the gas – and I'll take the blame for that. We weren't as aggressive. We were much more cautious. Really, that's kind of not the way we play. So, I'll take the blame for that because our guys are ready to play. In order to beat Rice and the remaining teams on our schedule, we're going to have to play for four quarters."
WKU Player Quotes
On performance of entire team
Brandon Doughty - "It took all three segments. Coach [Brohm] kind of preached that early. We had to be good in all three segments of the game. [Kylen] Towner almost took one back to open the game and that was kind of a momentum shifter for us. I thought we really came out and executed. We played a complete game and that's the first one we have kind of put together."
On WKU receivers
Brandon Doughty - "They surprise me every week man. I give them more credit for actually blocking on the perimeter. You can see the brotherhood that they have and that's what I get excited about. Taywan Taylor stepped up tremendously. Tyler Higbee stepped up and is still our guy. I think we need to get Antwane [Grant] going a little bit more. Jared's [Dangerfield] Mr. Reliable, and we just have a complete team on the offensive side of the ball and that's exciting.
On thinking about breaking all-time scoring record when coming to WKU
Garrett Schwettman - "Not even a little bit. I was just worried about winning the job first, but now that it's happened, it's kind of mind-blowing. It's an extreme blessing. I couldn't do it without this guy [Doughty] and the offense the past couple years. Even before that with Coach Taggert and those guys, I've been able to play with some coaches and players that have put me in a position to succeed like I have so I'm extremely blessed for that.
Brandon Doughty - "He's Mr. Consistent. He's going to make it. He's on our team. I don't know why he wears a white jersey during practice, but he scores points for the offense. He's Mr. Consistent and we're just happy to have him. He's a special guy. He's not just a good football player. He's a special person that holds dear to my heart."
On next goal
Garrett Schwettman - "I have no idea. I know I want to win a conference championship with these guys. Coming in four years ago, I thought we had a shot to. We didn't and we haven't won one since. I know that's one thing that Doughty and I talked about a couple times in the off season. It's our last go round and we want to make it special, and we want to win a conference championship for this school."
On the game today
Jared Dangerfield - "It was a blessing today. My leg felt a lot better than it has been. It's still not 100 percent, but it felt good out there. It felt loose running around out there." On offensive performance Jared Dangerfield - "I thought we set the tone right away. That's what we can do as an offense when we click on all cylinders. We just went out there and made a show." On game by WKU secondary DeAndre Simmons - "It was good. We all had a chance to show what we could really do and that we have depth at corner."
Miami Head Coach Chuck Martin
Opening Statement
"WKU beat us up in the trenches and on the perimeter. We had a very difficult time tackling them and had too many mental miscues. We unfortunately gave up some drives early and kept getting our defense back out there and we didn't handle that situation well. We moved the ball a little better the second half which was the only positive of the game. They controlled the line of scrimmage. We had a hard time tackling them. We couldn't run the ball on them until later in the game and then we had a very hard time with their perimeter guys. Last week we played really physical and this week we didn't play as physical and it showed."
On the offensive struggles
"I'm disappointed we didn't move the ball better today. Obviously we played better last week, in particular in the first half, where we got most of our yards. We're very young offensively and our inconsistency hurts us. We aren't good enough to go three and out a bunch and put our defense back on the field. We are much younger there than on defense. We did some nice things on offense last week but we haven't played great offensively all year."
On WKU quarterback Brandon Doughty's performance
"I've watched 16 games of him on film and he's looked like this in 15 of them. He threw 52 touchdowns last year which is insane. He's a very talented kid. He throws a lot of great throws but sometimes when he throws short his guys turn them into long gains which he's a benefactor of. He's really good at understanding defenses. We got to him a little bit in the first half pressure wise but in the second half he got the ball out quick to good athletes in space and we didn't have enough guys back there. He's a tremendous player."
Miami Quarterback Drew Kummer
On what you have to improve individually and as a team. "I just have to become more of a leader and hit some more receivers even if they are contested and provide them with a catchable ball. As a team, we have to improve all around. Looking at the game, we have a lot of stuff to improve and we'll watch film and come ready for practice Tuesday."
