BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- With a postseason berth still within grasp, WKU Baseball closes its regular season at Nick Denes Field against No. 19 Florida Atlantic in a three-game Conference USA series beginning at 6 p.m. (CT) Thursday.
Friday's first pitch is also set for 6 p.m. and Saturday's finale will start at 1 p.m. Thursday night's opener will feature a live video stream on WKUSports.tv and audio will be provided for all three games for subscribers.
The Hilltoppers (24-26, 10-17 C-USA) snapped an eight-game league losing streak with a 12-3 triumph over Marshall last Sunday and aim to carry that momentum into their final regular-season series. With a series victory over FAU (36-15, 17-10 C-USA) and some help from the league scoreboard, WKU can still clinch a berth in next week's C-USA Championship hosted by Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. Five teams have clinched their spot in next week's tournament but three remain up for grabs.
The Owls and Tops squared off 29 times as Sun Belt Conference foes between 2007-13 and will meet for the first time as C-USA foes Thursday night. Florida Atlantic leads the all-time series 19-10 and has won seven of the last eight meetings overall.
WKU will face one of its stiffest tests of the season when FAU comes to town this weekend. The Owls lead Conference USA in team batting average (.304), slugging percentage (.439), on-base percentage (.399), runs (366), hits (542), RBI (319) and triples (17). Five players have tallied over 50 hits and driven in 35 RBI for the offensive Owls, including C-USA Player of the Year candidate Brendon Sanger, who leads the league with a .367 batting average.
The Hilltoppers counter with a powerful offense of their own, one that leads the league in home runs with 44. Senior designated hitter Philip Diedrick (8) along with juniors Danny Hudzina (8) and Anderson Miller (12) make WKU the lone team in C-USA with three individuals who have tallied eight or more homers in 2015.
Both pitching staffs will certainly be tested against quality bats this weekend. Junior lefty John Harman (4-4, 4.37 ERA) gets the ball for WKU in Thursday's series opener and he'll duel with FAU's right-hander Kyle Miller (5-3, 4.02 ERA). Senior righty Brennan Pearson (0-5, 3.35 ERA) will make his third-straight weekend start for the Tops on Friday night and he is set to square off with the Owls' ace, Drew Jackson (5-2, 2.28 ERA). FAU will send southpaw Brandon Rhodes (3-1, 3.36 ERA) to the mound in Saturday's finale against a Hilltopper hurler to be determined.
Seven WKU seniors will play their final games at Nick Denes Field this weekend and they'll be recognized in a special pregame ceremony beginning at 12:40 p.m. Saturday.
Thursday night's game will feature $2 specials for fans as all tickets and select concessions will be available for $2. Friday is Education Day at The Nick, where all students K-8 will receive complimentary admission.
