BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - A pair of WKU women's golfers made up the five-person Conference USA All-Academic Team, the league announced on Thursday, as senior April Butler and junior Ellinor Haag were honored for their performance in the classroom.
"This is a tremendous honor for two very deserving candidates," said head coach Adam Gary. "They both take great pride in their accomplishments on the course, but they enjoy success in the classroom just as much. It's a testament to their work ethic to achieve both on and off the course and I couldn't be happier for them."
WKU's first and still only Presidential Scholar student-athlete, Butler has been accepted to and will attend medical school following graduation, while averaging 78.1 strokes per round through nine events this season. The Paducah, Ky., native carries a 4.0 as a Pre-Med (Biology) major and has tallied four top-20 finishes in 2014-15 and has played in eight or more events every season of her career on The Hill.
Her best finishes in 2014-15 was a seventh place finish at the Lady Eagle Invitational and a ninth place finish at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
Haag, WKU's top golfer, is averaging 75.1 strokes per round and has participated in all 12 events during 2014-15, posting 11 top 20 finishes and five top 10 finishes, including a championship at the Lady Eagle Invitational. A native of Sigtuna, Sweden, she was the C-USA Women's Golfer of the Week for March 12, 2015 after winning the event in Hattiesburg.
As a native Swedish speaker, she has overcome a massive language barrier to post a 3.96 GPA in International Business. Haag is currently ranked No. 503 in the country by GolfStat.
Both Haag and Butler, along with four other teammates, took home C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medals last week as WKU led the league with 54 overall.
The Lady Toppers are in the midst of preparations for the C-USA Championships, which tee off from the Verandah Club in Fort Myers, Fla., on April 20.
