Offensive Coordinator Tyson Helton | Defensive Coordinator Nick Holt
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Four weeks of spring ball are in the books after WKU enjoyed a spirited scrimmage inside Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium on Saturday under clear skies and comfortable temperatures.
The Tops worked out for two hours before taking the final 45 minutes to put their younger players on the field for a live tackling situations. For head coach Jeff Brohm, it has been encouraging to see the younger players getting so many looks at in-game situations.
"I saw some good things (today)," Brohm said. "I thought the defense had some energy. They were playing with a bit of an attitude and trying hard to improve. I think we have a chance to be a little more physical in the run game. They flew around and made plays and had some negative plays where they got the offense down in the backfield."
As is the case in intra-squad competition, there are positives and negatives to every play and situation, a situation offensive coordinator Tyson Helton echoed.
"It was a typical spring practice, some good, some bad," Helton noted. "The main thing was that a lot of players got reps. We tried to protect the really good ones, the ones we know can play, and get some of the younger guys some reps. We'll go through the last week of spring and make some decisions on where we are."
For the spring, Helton noted that he was impressed with the performance of a trio of up-and-comers in wide receiver Nacarius Fant, running back Marquez Trigg and offensive center Dennis Edwards.
On the defensive side, associate head coach Nick Holt has been particularly impressed with the enthusiasm his side of the ball is showing this spring.
"It was a great day to be out here playing football," Holt said of the particularly nice day. "I'm sure we made a ton of mistakes - we'll get that corrected - I was happy with our energy and our attitude. We had fun out there. We made a lot of plays against a great offense. We're playing faster and with enthusiasm because we know what we're doing a little bit more."
WKU will practice three times next week before Saturday's Red vs. White Spring Game, set for 1 p.m. Admission and parking, including tailgating across campus, will be free.
