WKU-MT Post Game Press Conference Quotes
October 10, 2015
WKU Quarterback Brandon Doughty
On the win
"It means a lot. It's huge. We practiced pissed off again. I think Coach has really done a good job of getting us going. Just to be able to click like that in the first half, that's what important and encouraging going forward. That's a good defense. We really played a heck of a game. Coach called a heck of a game. Anytime you can get a rivalry win like that at home, that's our goal, to protect The Houch. It's a good win for us for sure."
On the performance on the offense in the first half
"We're just kind of rolling, like I said. We're really tuned into the game plan. I think Coach has done an amazing job doing the little things. We have a little chip on our shoulder. That's what we have to keep doing. We have to keep going. We can't settle. I don't like how we finished the game. I don't like how we were conservative. I'm not saying I wanted to rub it in, but I just wanted to see us push in the second half a little more. There are things to work on. It wasn't perfect. And that's the scary thing about our offense right now."
On the streak without a home interception coming to an end
"I'm just glad it's over. That streak has been in the back of my mind so I'm glad it's over. I'm glad we won and it wasn't something that made us lose the game. I'm OK with throwing picks as long as we win the game. It was a bad decision, bad read. I should've just gone down. They had the guys unblocked. We tried to take a shot. It's been an honor. It's cool. I'm really comfortable being at home. I feed off our fans energy."
WKU Wide Receiver Nacarius Fant
On the double pass touchdown
"It's a play we'd been practicing all week long. Basically, Doughty throws me a bubble screen, (Taywan Taylor) fakes the block, and I just throw it far and let him run under it. It's wide open."
On the play of the offense in the first half
"We did score a lot of points in the first half, but there were a lot of mistakes also. Coach Helton made us aware of that at halftime. He was talking to us a little bit about the drops at the end of the half. Those were important. We had about a minute to go, had a chance to make plays, and dropped easy passes. Those things need to be cleaned up. We want to make sure we execute every way that we can. We're not going to be perfect. We know that. But, passes like that, when we can make yards for the team, we need to be able to do that."
WKU Running Back Anthony Wales
On beating Middle Tennessee
"I feel really good, especially being able to go out there and help out my brothers. Ever since I've been here, we've lost to Middle. My freshman year, they came and beat us here and then last year we went and lost in triple overtime. It just feels real good to get one against those guys."
On returning to the lineup this week
"It feels really good. Like I've been telling Coach, I just want to be out there to help my brothers out. If I have to pick up a blitz or run a stretch route, I just want to be out there with my brothers and I was able to do that today."
WKU Safety Marcus Ward
On the defense's play of late
"Ever since the Indiana loss, we've just been getting lined up. Every play, just after you make a play, you have a sense of urgency to lineup before they do. I think that's just the big emphasis every week. After that, that's half the battle. After you do that, you can just play with them. I think that's probably been our biggest emphasis."
WKU Head Coach Jeff Brohm Quotes
"Well, that one feels good. I'm not going to lie that's a very rewarding victory. We felt Middle Tennessee was a very good football team, and we still think they are. They've played a good schedule and really good competition. For our guys to come out in the first half and play like that, I couldn't be any happier. I couldn't be prouder of them. We've got a great group of guys that have great character. They enjoy the game of football. They like just working and getting better. We challenge them each and every game to try to find a way to get better, not look at the scoreboard and just try to improve. I think we have coaches and players on our staff that are man enough to be critical of themselves. When there are problems, we try to identify them and fix them. The last three games I'm extremely happy, but this one right here really tops it off. I'm proud of our guys. To play that way in the first half, it's just remarkable."
On fast starts
"It definitely helps [to start fast]. When you can get out to a lead, it helps everybody. We try to be aggressive early on. We try to take shots. We've got playmakers on offense that have gotten it done. We're protecting [the quarterback] well. We're trying to be creative. We're trying to have fun with it. When we get out to a lead, it helps the defense. It helps the special teams. It helps everybody. Without question, that's important to us, getting off to a good start. We want to be aggressive, but our guys are executing. Yes, it's the way we want to start our games. It really helps us secure a win."
On Anthony Wales
"I think he's going to continue to get better. I thought last week he was a little rusty. He's a guy that needs practice reps, needs game reps, but he works hard. He's been putting in the time. He came out today and carried the ball a lot more and made some runs. He kind of gives us a different element. He's got some speed to him, some elusiveness. [D'Andre] Ferby is more of a strong, physical back with some power so we've got to make sure those guys continue to improve and get better. Every week they try to improve and they work hard at it. We've got a couple running backs we sub in to help them, but those guys are great young men that enjoy the game of football. I was happy to see him play better this week."
On conference standings
"I feel good about where we're at. I think we've been playing well. This was a big test for us. Middle Tennessee is a good football team. To win in that fashion, yeah I do feel good. There's a lot of season left. The mantra that we have around here is that we just play one game at a time and win, lose or draw, we just try to come back and try to get better. I do feel good about the position that we're in right now."
On WKU offense
"It's been fun. We do try to score points. We do like to take shots. We do like to be creative at times and have fun with it, and our players like that. All of our guys like playing the game of football. They like doing new things. Obviously, we have a base system, but we like to be creative and think outside the box. We're not scared to try different things, and our guys have been executing it. Hats off to them because we've hit vertical shots up the field, and when you do that, it opens up the defense. It helps the running game, and when you score with it, it helps your overall team. Yes, it's been a lot of fun."
On WKU defense
"I like our defense. I think we have guys that work hard. They play hard. We're not always perfect, but nobody is. We did some things wrong in the Indiana game that we're not going to let happen again or at least try. I think a few things that we have fixed there have helped us the last three games. We've definitely played better. We've gotten stops. We've gotten off the field, for the most part, better on third downs. We've tackled a little better. They made some plays in the second half, but I think our defense is starting to gain confidence. What I like is that we are more than one deep at every position. We may not have played as many guys as we normally do today, but we have depth and I like our guys."
