KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- After three days of playing, the Lady Topper golf team concluded play at the Kiawah Island Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston, in 23rd place with a 965 overall team score.
The Lady Toppers improved their standing each day, but a blustery day on the par-72, 6,001 yard Cougar Point and Oak Point courses on Sunday kept them from advancing further up the leaderboards. The team's 965 score was broken down 328-316-321.
Kent State won the 36-team event, shooting an 892 while Wad Phaewchimplee of Kent State and Katie Joo of Boston College won the individual titles, tying at 220 over three rounds.
"We could have turned it in after the first day, but the team kept improving, kept finding ways to get their shots and really attack what was a very tough course," said head coach Ron Burchett. "We wanted to play some challenging courses early on this season and get some great experience and keep improving."
For the Lady Tops, Michaela Bordeianu's 235 (81-78-76) was a team-best as she tied for 66th overall. Ellinor Haag shot the lowest round of any Hilltopper for the event on Tuesday, carding a two-over 74 to bring her total to 237 (80-83-74) and placing her in a tie for 79th place.
April Butler carded a 14-over 86 on Tuesday, finishing with a 246 (84-76-86) overall, to tie for No. 120 overall while Daniela Galassi turned in a 13-over 85 to finish in 133rd with a 252 (83-84-85).
Rounding out the card for the Lady Toppers was McKenzie Smith who finished in a tie for 141st with a 254 overall score (85-79-90).
Next up for the squad is a trip to central Florida for the Ocala Spring Invitational, hosted by Morehead State on March 23-24.
