BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- With three of the top five individual finishers after two rounds, the WKU Lady Toppers hold a commanding 29-stroke team lead over the field at the 1st Annual Lady Topper Classic.
Held at the par 72, Bowling Green Country Club, the Lady Tops had three golfers finish in the Top 5 and four of the Top 10 to combine for a 608 (305-303) team score on Monday. Austin Peay finished in second on the day with a 637 (316-321) team score.
"This is a very tough course," said head coach Ron Burchett. "We really had to continue to play our game and stay very focused in a competitive field. Tomorrow, we need to maintain that focus and continue to play good golf."
Paced throughout the day by Ellinor Haag, the Lady Toppers were dominant on their home course. Haag led all golfers in par five scoring (4.75) and finished with a five-over 149 (73-76) to finish one stroke better than teammate April Butler's six-over 150 (77-73).
Daniela Galassi finished the day in fifth place, shooting a nine-over 153 (77-76), while McKenzie Smith tied for eighth with a 12-over 156 (78-78).
Michaela Bordeianu posted equal eight-over 80 scores in both rounds to finish in a tie for 13th place with a 16-over 160. Mallory Vaughan also competed as an individual, carding a 32-over 176 (86-90) to tie for 43rd in the 52-player field.
The competition is close between the individuals as Cincinnati's Valentine Herrera and Tara Liebert, both competing as individuals, tallied seven-over 151 two-round scores and trail Haag by just two strokes.
Of note, Austin Peay's Amber Bosworth aced the No. 7 hole in what is believed to be the first hole-in-one on the course this year at BGCC.
The eight-team, 12-individual field will play their final round tomorrow and will tee off at 8 a.m. in a shotgun start from every hole.
