AMES, Iowa - WKU took a limited number of Hilltopper runners to the prestigious Iowa State Classic this weekend and walked away with wins in the 4X400-meter relay and the 200-meter dash at the Lied Recreation Center.
Freshman Ventavius Sears, sophomore Ja'Karyus Redwine and seniors Chris Chamness and Elvyonn Bailey turned in the 10th fastest 4X400-relay performance in the nation this season with a victorious clocking of 3:07.80. The time was the second-fastest in WKU history and leads the Sun Belt Conference by nearly four seconds.
Bailey also experienced victory in the 200-meter dash, claiming top individual honors with a time of 21.32, which ranks third in the league this season. Sears, Redwine, Emmanuel Dasor and Chamness all finished the 200-meter dash in under 21.70 and took home 4th-7th place honors.
The five sprinters hold five of the top seven 200-meter dash times in the Sun Belt Conference this season, including Sears' SBC leading time of 21.28 at the Meyo Invitational.
Senior David Mokone turned in his best 800-meter run of the season, finishing eighth at the meet with a time of 1:49.49. Mokone's clocking ranks 29th nationally this season and leads the Sun Belt Conference by over four seconds.
WKU Track and Field will now prepare for the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham , Ala. on Feb. 24-25.
