WKU senior All-American candidate Alexis Govan sat down with her teammates, the 2014-15 WKU Lady Topper Basketball squad, and members of the men's basketball team to discuss life off the court, life on the court and everything in between in a series of question and answer sessions.
Govan, who is interning with the WKU Athletic Media Relations/Communications department this semester, is returning to the court in 2014-15 after missing much of last season with a fractured tibia. As a sophomore, Govan was one of the most prolific scorers in the nation and will enter the 2014-15 season as the second leading active scorer in Conference USA behind teammate Chastity Gooch.
Today, Govan sits down with Jaiveonna Norris:
How has the transition from high school to college been so far?
JN: It's been good, it's kind of challenging as far as the pace of the game. It's just something I'm going to have to get used to.
Why did you choose WKU?
JN: I chose it because of the family atmosphere and the tradition. It felt like a home away from home and it instantly felt like the place for me.
What was it like witnessing the team play in the NCAA tournament last year?
JN: It was amazing; even though I wasn't there I was really excited for the team. It also made me even more excited to come.
What is something you bring to this team?
JN: I can shoot the ball so when I have a post player on me they're going to have to step out. I stretch the floor so that other people are able to drive.
What are your expectations for your first season on the Hill?
JN: I just want us to get back to the tournament and win a game.
Is there a returner you feel has really taken you under their wing?
JN: I think everyone has, we all try to help each other out. As a team everyone tries to pick me up and anyone else up so I can't just choose one person.
What has been your proudest basketball memory?
JN: My senior night in high school, I had 18 points and made like 3 threes.
Is there a certain game you're looking forward to the most?
JN: Not really. I'm just really excited to finally play my first college game, so I'm looking forward to any opportunity I can get.
How have the upperclassman helped you to become a better basketball player just in your short time here?
JN: Just watching how hard they go and how much they talk to each other. Just being able to watch and learn from them, they've helped me a lot.
Coming into this season what is one thing you really hope to improve within your game?
JN: My defense, I'm working on going hard all the time and just improving.
If you could trade places with any celebrity for a day, who would it be? And why?
JN: Kevin Durant. I think it'd be cool everyone knows him and he's the reigning MVP of the league.
What has your favorite experience been so far?
JN: The closed scrimmage, I really got a chance to get a feel for the game and how it would be.
Who is your biggest influence?
JN: My mom, because she's a really strong women and does everything for me. I really look up to her.
What has become your essential college item that you can't live without?
JN: My pillow on my bed, it's a cheetah pillow. I honestly have to sleep with it every night.
What is your biggest goal for your Lady Topper career?
JN: Get to the tournament in back-to-back years.
What is your favorite thing about WKU so far?
JN: I just love the atmosphere, the footballs games, and just everything about the people here.
On a scale of 1-10 how hard would you say summer workouts were? Why?
JN: I would have to say a 10. The transition from high school workouts to college is a huge difference so I have to say a 10.
Describe Coach Heard in one word.
JN: Dedicated. She does everything for us and is so passionate about everything she does.
What's the best sporting event you've ever attended?
JN: Chicago Blackhawks hockey game.
What's something interesting about you that no one knows?
JN: I love to do hair, so if you need your hair done come to me.
