DENTON, Texas - With a berth in the Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship secured, WKU Soccer (10-6, 5-4 C-USA) closes out its regular season slate at league leader North Texas (13-4-1, 7-1-1 C-USA) at 7 p.m. (CT) on Friday at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
The Lady Toppers clinched a spot in the Conference USA Championship with their 2-0 win over Southern Miss Sunday, upping their league point total to 15. Depending on results across the league this weekend, WKU could wind up with a seed as high as No. 4 in the tournament and as low as No. 8.
Eight of the 14 C-USA teams make the tournament and five have already secured berths. With one game remaining for every league team except FIU and UAB (two games), six teams remain in contention for the final three spots. The Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship, hosted by Charlotte, begins with quarterfinal action on Nov. 5 and runs through the Nov.9 championship match.
WKU's duel against North Texas will be streamed live on the Conference USA Digital Network and updates will also be provided on social media at @WKU_Soccer.
The Lady Toppers and Mean Green are very familiar with one another after playing 19 times during 12 as Sun Belt Conference rivals. North Texas holds the all-time series edge 10-7-2 and is 4-2 all-time in Denton, but WKU has gone 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings dating back to the 2008 SBC Tournament.
North Texas has already clinched at least a share of the Conference USA regular-season title and can take sole possession of the crown with a win or draw against WKU Friday. The Lady Toppers will have a stiff test in front of them, as the Mean Green have only surrendered four goals in league action.
WKU forwards Iris Dunn and Lauren Moats will lead the Lady Topper attack against the stingy North Texas defense, having combined for six of WKU's 10 scores in C-USA action. Both players continued their climb in the WKU record books last weekend, with Moats jumping to seventh all-time in career goals (17) and 10th in points (36). Dunn's game-winner versus Southern Miss vaulted her to 10th all-time in goals (12) just 37 games into her young career.
Freshman goalkeeper Allison Leone ranks third in Conference USA with seven shutouts and fourth with 80 saves but will face her toughest challenge of the season in North Texas. The Mean Green have outscored conference opponents 18-4 this season and hold a 31-10 goal advantage over their opposition overall. North Texas is led by junior forward Karla Pineda, who leads Conference USA in points (29), goals (11) and shots (75).
The 2014 WKU Soccer season is being presented by the United States Marines.
