Clarksville, Tenn. – The WKU men’s and women’s track and field teams combined to win nine events at Saturday’s Austin Peay Invitational, headlined by the success of the relays and throwers.
Elvyonn Bailey, Ja’Karyus Redwine, Kamohelo Mangojeane and Chris Chamness teamed up to win the 4X100 and 4X400-meter relays, including a 4X400-meter win by over 14 seconds.
The Lady Topper 4X100-meter relay consisting of Sharika Smith, Gelela Cooley, Monti Willis and Maikea Davis cruised to victory with a time of 48.28 seconds.
Throwers Houston Croney, Satrina Oliveira and Jessica Ramsey all picked up wins on the afternoon, with Croney and Ramsey winning the men’s and women’s hammer throw. Croney’s mark of 178-feet-5 inches is the fifth longest in the Sun Belt this season. Ramsey’s clip of 153-feet-4 inches was a personal-record performance.
Oliveira captured the win in the discus throw, hurling the disc 149-feet-8 inches to claim top honors. Oliveira’s throw was the second longest in the Sun Belt this season. She also finished second in the hammer behind Ramsey while Ramsey placed second in the discus with a toss of 148-feet-7 inches.
Derrick Hill, who won the Sun Belt Conference title in the high jump at February’s championships, cleared a personal-record 6-feet-11 inches at the meet to earn the win. Hill’s leap is tied for the fourth-highest mark in school history. Teammates Cyrus Johnson and Donovan Halsel finished second and third, respectively.
In the men’s 800-meter run, WKU took four of the top five spots, highlighted by Mangojeane’s win with a time of 1:55.78. Aaron Stevens placed second while Chamness and Ilia Eligulchvili finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Rounding out the victories for WKU was Cyrus Johnson’s win in the 110-meter hurdles, which he earned with a time of 15.24 seconds.
Both the Hilltoppers and Lady Toppers will be staggered throughout the country next weekend as WKU athletes will compete at the Stanford Relays in Stanford, Cal., the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. and at the Bellarmine Invitational in Louisville, Ky.
