KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The WKU men's golf team closed out their fall season on Tuesday as they wrapped up the third and final round with a 16th place finish at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic, held at the par-72 Turtle Point Golf Course.
Keith Tooley, Jr., led the Tops over the course of the event, hitting a one-over 73 on the day to end the event with a 12-over 228 (76-79-73) after having shooting the second lowest round of the event for the team on Tuesday.
Tooley ended the event in a tie for 41st place, shooting as the No. 4 golfer for WKU.
Brandon Beckham's seven-over 79 on the day put him in a tie for 62nd with a 232 (75-78-79) total score while Trey Aguirre, who had shot identical four-over 76s in the previous two rounds, turned in a 10-over 82 on the third and final round to finish in a tie for 67th. Aguirre ended the event with a 234 (76-76-82) overall score.
Cameron Beal and Taylor Thompson shot an identical eight-over 80 round to finish in a tie for 69th place with a 235 overall score. Beal opened the tournament with an even-par 72 and shot 83 in the second round.
Thompson went 78-77-80 for the event.
Southeastern Conference member South Carolina took home the team title as the only team to shoot an even-par 864 team score over the course of the event. Nick Nelson of Marquette, which finished second as a team with an 886, won the individual title with a six-under 210 (70-67-73) for the event.
With the closing of the event, so to comes the end of the fall season for coach Phillip Hatchett's squad. The team will open their spring and championship season on March 14 at the Seminole Classic, a three-day event in Tallahassee, Fla., hosted by Florida State.
