LOXLEY, Ala. -- In their final event of the fall season, the WKU women's golf team finished the opening round of the Steelwood Collegiate in a three-way tie for second place after carding a 313 team score.
The event was held on the par-72, 6,164 yard Steelwood Country Club and was hosted by Sun Belt Conference member South Alabama. SBC rival ULM was also a member of the field and finished the day as the event's top team.
"It was a nice day for us overall," said coach Ron Burchett. "We made some timely shots and really hit the ball well. Ellinor and April both had great days for us and we'll take a lot of positive momentum into tomorrow's rounds."
Ellinor Haag and April Butler both turned in top five individual rounds on the day, shooting a one-over 73 and four-over 76, respectively. Coming in at No. 20 overall, Michaela Bordeianu shot an eight-over 80 while McKenzie Smith hit a 12-over 84 to finish the day tied for No. 35.
Daniela Galassi wrapped up the Hilltopper scoring with her 13-over 85, good enough for the No. 37 spot.
Reigning SBC Golfer of the Month Alison Knowles led the individual field with an even-par 72 and finished just one stroke better than Haag who ended the day as the No. 2 golfer.
Butler's 76 has her just four strokes off the lead and in fifth place.
ULM leads all teams with a 304 round while South Alabama and Troy matched the Tops' 313 score.
Tee times for the final round tomorrow begin at 9 a.m. CT.
