EARLYSVILLE, Va. - WKU junior David Mokone finished 36th in the men's 10K race while sophomore Katie Lever led the Lady Toppers with a 37th-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional as the cross country season came to a close for WKU Friday afternoon at Panorama Farms.
Mokone ran his 10K in 30:08.7 to lead the Hilltoppers for the sixth consecutive meet, finishing 12 spots ahead of his position at the 5K split. Freshman Peter Agaba, the only other Hilltopper to finish among the Top 100 runners, climbed 23 spots from his 5K split to finish the 10K in 30:51.6 at 68th place.
Aaron Stevens, Kamohelo Mangoejane and Lucas Atherton rounded out the Hilltopper scoring as WKU finished 23rd out of 34 men's teams that competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional.
Lever was the top finisher for the Lady Toppers for the first time in her career, finishing the women's 6K in 21:26.1 to garner 37th-place honors. Lever was positioned at 66th place after her 3K split but was able to climb 29 spots in the second half of her race to finish 37th. Her 29 spot improvement in the second 3K split was the highest climb of any runner to place in the Top 65 overall.
Fellow sophomore Taylor Carlin also improved dramatically in the second half of the race, moving past 22 runners to finish 106th at 22:26.9. All five Lady Topper scorers improved their position by at least 10 spots during the second split, with Lever 29-spot climb being the highest jump.
The Lady Toppers wound up finishing 25th out of 38 teams.
Both teams' cross country seasons come to a close after a 2013 campaign that featured a combined four All-Sun Belt Conference accolades, an individual Sun Belt crown for Mokone and a pair of runner up finishes from sophomore Lindsey Hinken.
