BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Junior outfielder Philip Diedrick blasted a solo home run in the first inning and Ty Hogan plated the game-winning run with an RBI single in the sixth inning to give the Red team a 2-1 win over Black and a clinch of the WKU Fall World Series.
Diedrick launched the only home run of the Fall World Series over the left field fence on the third pitch he saw from Black pitcher Jake Thompson to give Red a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Thompson would calm down after surrendering Diedrick's bomb, striking out four batters and scattering three hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Sophomore Anderson Miller tied the game up at 1-1 for the Black team in the third inning, ripping an RBI triple to score freshman Harrison Scanlon. Hogan would go on to provide the heroics for the Red team, pounding out an RBI single with the bases loaded in the final inning.
Justin Hageman tossed six full innings for Red, fanning six batters and sprinkling three hits while surrendering just one earned run. Freshman Cody Coll made a relief appearance on the mound for Black and struck out two while surrendering one run off one hit.
Diedrick, Hogan, David Simmons and Clint Hardy all finished with hits for Red while Miller, Scanlon and Wilcox tallied hits for Black.
With Red's win, they have clinched the WKU Fall World Series. The Black team will look to avoid the sweep Saturday morning at 11 a.m. (CT). Blake Allen (Red) and Jackson Sowell (Black) will take the mound in the finale at Nick Denes Field.
