Are you ready for some football? WKU Athletics counts you down to opening day at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium on September 1, 2012 with the 50-day “Countdown to Kickoff” series on WKUSports.com. Each day will be accompanied by a significant number in WKU football history.
WALT HEROD'S CAREER PUNT YARDAGE STILL STANDS AMONG WKU RECORDS
Former WKU punter Walt Herod averaged 41 yards per punt during his career that ended back in 1976, setting the WKU record – a record that stands 35 years later.
Herod lettered at WKU from 1973-76, punting 179 times for 11,450 yards, setting the WKU record for both net punting yards and average yards per punt in a career. His 179 punts rank fifth in WKU history.
Herod’s records could be in serious jeopardy, as current WKU punter Hendrix Brakefield, who is entering his junior season on the Hill, has averaged just less than 41 yards per punt in his first two seasons at WKU, netting over 5,500 yards punting on 135 career punts.
