BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University baseball team will be hosting a pair of winter camps January 14 and 15 for both youth and high school age students. All camps will take place indoors at the Hilltoppers' newly renovated hitting facility.
The Youth Skills baseball camp is scheduled for Jan. 15 and available to youth ages 7-12 and will cost $60. The first session runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the second session following between 2 and 5 p.m.
The Youth Skills camps will cover all the fundamentals and basics of baseball, from catching and throwing to pitching and hitting. Kids will have an opportunity to learn how baseball is played correctly from mechanics to approaches to baseball tactics. Learn baseball the right way at a young age and get a head start on becoming a solid overall ball player.
The High School Hitting Instruction and Pitching/Catching Camps are scheduled for Jan. 14 and available to students in 8-12th grade and will cost $65. The hitting camp runs from 9-12 a.m., while the pitching/catching camp is schedule for 1-4 p.m.
The hitting camp will include the mechanics, drills, approaches and thought processes that have developed WKU into an offensive power over the past decade. WKU baseball has a team batting average of over .310, while hitting 307 homeruns during the past 5 seasons in one of the top 6 conferences in college baseball.
The pitching camp will include mechanics, drill work, pitch grips, pitch selections, pre/post game routines and video work.
The catching camp will include mechanics, drill work, receiving, blocking, mechanics for throwing to bases, pitch calling and flexibility training. 2011 starting catcher Matt Rice was a 9th round selection in the MLB draft and the Capital One Academic All-American for all of college baseball.
