BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — In a night of broken records, perhaps the most impressive was the one that happened in the blink of an eye at the start of the second inning.
In front of 6,183 fans, the largest crowd to ever see a WKU home baseball game and the largest to ever see a college baseball game in the state of Kentucky, WKU sent 16 men to the plate and scored 16 runs on 13 hits before Kentucky was able to record an out in the second inning.
The 16 runs in the second inning is believed to be the largest scoring inning in WKU baseball history and fell just shy of the NCAA record for runs in an inning. Wichita State scored 21 runs in the sixth inning of a game against Friends on March 3, 1984, and Penn scored 21 in the sixth inning against Franklin & Marshall on May 25, 1983. The NCAA record for runs in the second inning is 20, set by Delaware in a game against Maryland-Eastern Shore on April 29, 1993.
Only four teams in NCAA history have had more than 16 consecutive batters reach base in a game, none of which have occurred since 1998.
Also, only 11 times in NCAA history has a team had more than 13 hits in a single inning. The most recent was when Oklahoma State had 14 hits in the first inning against Texas-Pan American on April 15, 2003.
