BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In just one season in a Hilltopper uniform, Shane Cameron has already proven that he’s everything the coaches were hoping for when he came to the Hill as a transfer from Conners State College in Oklahoma.
The right-hander made 13 starts for WKU in 2009, working at least five innings in nine of those outings. The consistency he brought to the pitching rotation as a junior was one of the reasons the Hilltoppers were able to win eight of their 10 conference series and finish with a 21-8 record in league play.
“One thing Shane brings to the table is his ability to compete,” Hilltopper pitching coach Matt Myers said. “Every time Shane took the ball last year he gave us a chance to win. His ability to throw three pitches for strikes and control the running game could very easily make him a Friday night guy.”
Cameron logged 77.0 innings in 2009, finishing with a 5-2 record and an ERA of 5.03. Opponents hit .273 against him overall, and he held left-handed hitters to just a .248 batting average. In addition to his 13 starts, Cameron also made two appearances out of the bullpen.
“When you have a guy who works fast, throws strikes and controls the running game like Shane, it really gives you a chance to win,” Myers explained.
Cameron was at his best in Sun Belt Conference play, where he emerged as a solid Sunday starter throughout the conference slate. He pitched six innings of two-hit baseball against ULM on March 8, earning the win and finishing off a Hilltopper sweep of the Warhawks. He worked 7.2 innings at Troy on March 22, scattering eight hits and allowing just two runs in an extra-inning WKU victory.
His most impressive stretch of the season came April 12-26, when he had three straight outings of at least 6.1 innings pitched and three runs allowed or fewer against New Orleans, Arkansas State and Florida Atlantic. He threw seven shutout innings against the Red Wolves on April 19, fanning six and walking just one.
The coaching staff knew it would be getting a workhorse when Cameron came to WKU as a transfer. He pitched two seasons at Conners State College in his native Oklahoma, compiling a 10-2 mark and a 2.38 ERA in 102.0 career innings. He also maintained a strikeout-per-inning mark in his two seasons, fanning 104 in his junior college career.
As he enters his senior season in 2010, Myers and the rest of the coaching staff expect more of the same from Cameron as he continues to build off his previous success and bring veteran leadership to the Hilltopper pitching staff.
“What I want to see from him this year is exactly what he’s shown us in the past,” Myers said. “He has his goals, he believes in himself and he wants to win. That’s all you can ask for.”
