Florence, Ala. The Western Kentucky University men’s and women’s tennis teams concluded a successful week over spring break on courts throughout Alabama. Over the trip the Hilltoppers went 3-0 while the Lady Toppers were 2-1.
The three wins advanced the men’s squad to 8-3 on the season and the women’s team improved to 5-6.
On Sunday both squads defeated Alabama A&M. The Hilltoppers swept all matches giving up just four games in nine matches. Thomas Krug led off at the top spot with a victory over S. Walker 6-0, 6-1. Chad True downed G. Rodgers 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 position while Andy True took care of J. Singleton 6-0, 6-0 at the third spot. No. 4 Currie Martin collected a win over M. Ranko 6-0, 6-0. Andrew Swanson beat B. Ngomsi 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and David Bowman defeated M. Turner 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
C. True and Krug teamed at No. 1 doubles to down Walker and Singleton 8-1. Quinn Saine and Bowman defeated Rodgers and Ranko at the No. 2 spot 8-1 and A. True and Martin beat Ngomsi and Turner 8-0.
The Lady Toppers lead off the match by collecting the crucial doubles point with wins at the top spot and No. 3. Erin Fulkerson and Marija Djuran beat M. Johnson and T. McClaine 8-2 at No. 1 and Carrie True teamed with Leanne Caplinger Y. Muskwe and Grant 8-1.
Djuran, Ca. True and Caplinger also took home singles victories. Djuran downed C. Psangwe at the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 7-5. True beat McClaine at the No. 4 position 6-2, 6-1 and Caplinger knocked off L. Cintorn 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.
The Hilltopppers took down Alabama State 7-0 on Monday by not dropping a set. Krug defeated D. Alyekeyeyer 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. C. True knocked off K. Allen 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and A. True collected a win over R. Derizzro at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3. No. 4 Martin beat B. Rumph 6-3, 6-0 while Bowman won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 over I. Burt and Saine won by default at No. 6.
The Hilltoppers dropped only one game in the doubles portion of the match. All six players collected wins in doubles as well.
The Lady Toppers also beat Alabama State 7-0 with results similar to the Hilltoppers. Djuran beat S. Rollins 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Fulkerson downed A. Lindsey 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 while Brittany Waiz, Ca. True, Krystal Brown and Caplinger all collected wins with a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Fulkerson and Djuran led off with a doubles victory over Rollins and Lindsey 8-1. Holly Kell teamed with Waiz to beat M. Hunter and L. Irvine at No. 2, 8-1 and Ca. True and Caplinger knocked off D. Sanctier and Flemming 8-0.
On Tuesday the Hilltoppers collected their third win of the trip over North Alabama 4-3. Krug beat J. Misnos 6-3, 6-4 at the top spot. Martin and Swanson both collected wins in singles at No. 5 and 6 respectively.
The doubles point proved to be the winning point of the match. Krug and C. True downed Z. Derenznicui and C. Areenas 8-2 at the top spot and Bowman and Saine won by default at No. 3.
Against North Alabama the Lady Toppers only managed to collect two wins. Ca. True beat L. Ulasden in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 and Caplinger downed K. Realmunto at the No. 6 spot 6-2, 6-0.
Both teams will be back on the court on Thursday at Cumberland (Tenn.). The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. (CDT).
