BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Women's Tennis freshman Virginia Madueño was named the Conference USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
"We're very proud of Virginia getting conference Player of the Week," WKU Women's Tennis Head Coach Greg Davis said. "She's done a tremendous job this year as a freshman for us. Usually as freshmen, I like to play them a little bit lower. She's kind of gotten thrown into the deep end up playing No. 3 right now and we're very proud of her accomplishments."
Madueño improved to 15-4 in singles play this season with a pair of wins last week at the No. 3 position. Madueño topped Campbellsville's Valentina Curli 6-1, 6-0 on Thursday, and followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Austin Peay's Luca Bohlen on Saturday. Madueño is now 5-1 at the No. 3 position, and also has a 6-0 record at No. 4 and a 4-1 record at No. 5 this spring.
Madueño's 15 singles wins this season are tied for sixth-most in a single season in program history, and she now ranks second in singles wins in a season among true freshmen in program history.
In addition to her singles success, Madueño also went 2-0 in doubles play last week with teammate Emily Schut at the No. 1 position. The two defeated Campbellsville's Miho Akita and Jimena Palomo 6-0 on Thursday in WKU's 7-0 sweep, and they added a 6-3 victory over Austin Peay's Luca Bohlen and Yi-Ching Huang on Saturday. The two are now 2-2 when playing together in doubles this season, with all four of those matches coming at the No. 1 position. Madueño has nine doubles wins this season.
It is the second weekly award Lady Topper Tennis has received this season. Madueño and Barbara Olvera were named the CUSA Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 4. WKU has now claimed 12 CUSA weekly awards under Davis.
The Lady Toppers are 10-13 entering Thursday's Senior Day match against Middle Tennessee at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park. The Senior Day ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. CT, and the match is set for a 1 p.m. CT start.
