Fresh off a 95-78 win over Murray State in the 2008-09 season opener Friday night, the Western Kentucky University women's basketball team turns around Sunday afternoon to host 12th-ranked Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. (CST) at E.A. Diddle Arena. WKU is looking to snap a three-game losing skid against the Commodores. The last win for the Lady Toppers over Vandy was an 85-77 victory on Dec. 9, 2004.
u This will the fifth straight season that WKU and Vanderbilt have faced off in the regular season. The Commodores have been ranked in all five of those contests.
u WKU has two wins over ranked teams under Mary Taylor Cowles both coming in E.A. Diddle Arena. That includes an 85-77 win over an 11th-ranked Vanderbilt team on Dec. 9, 2004.
u Vanderbilt is one of four teams on the Lady Topper schedule that played in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament last season, joining next Friday’s opponent George Washington, Duke and Pittsburgh.
u Vanderbilt is the first of two Southeastern Conference teams that will visit E.A. Diddle Arena this season. Kentucky will play WKU in Bowling Green on Dec. 4.
u For the second straight year, the Lady Toppers reached the 90-point mark in their season opener. WKU opened the 2007-08 campaign with a 90-73 win over East Tennessee State. The Lady Toppers’ 95 points were also the most since a 96-80 win over Indiana to start the 1999-2000 campaign.
