Evansville, Ind. — The Western Kentucky University women’s tennis team competed in its first tournament of the year at the Aces Fall Classic this past weekend.
After being defeated in the first round by Meg Rozboril of Morehead State 6-3, 7-6, 9-7, Erin Fulkerson made her way to the finals of the back draw before losing to Molly Casperson of Butler 8-4. Fulkerson beat Mariana Pagan of Austin Peay 8-6 in the quarterfinals of the back draw and rolled over Michelle Girgenti of Southern Indiana 8-0 in the semifinals of the A Flight singles.
Freshman Carrie True won her opening-round match over MSU’s Heather Butt 6-2, 6-2, before being beaten by Tiffany McLoughlin of Butler 6-0, 6-0. True found her way to the finals of the B Flight singles back draw by defeating Katie Jo Clagg of USI 8-0 and APSU’s Morgan Klieber 8-3. She was downed by Butt in the finals 8-3.
Krystal Brown lost her first-round match 6-1, 6-0 to Gabi Bobrowski of Butler in the main draw of C Flight singles before making her way to the finals of the back draw. Brown downed Emily Schum of USI 8-3 and APSU’s Brittany Hays 8-3. Catherine Butts of MSU defeated Brown 8-1 in the finals.
Newcomer Leeanne Caplinger won her first match of the D Flight singles main draw 6-1, 6-1 over Meredith Lortie of MSU on her way to the finals of the main draw. Caplinger defeated Mary Lefler of APSU 6-2, 6-4 before losing the Bulter’s Valerie Vinluan 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.
Marija Djuran, Frances Trigg, and Brittany Waiz also competed at the tournament.
The Lady Toppers will be in action again this weekend at the APSU Invitational in Clarksville, Tenn., on Saturday.
