Clarksville, Tenn. — The Western Kentucky University women’s tennis team competed at the Austin Peay State University Invitational, Sept. 28-30. The Lady Toppers finished the event with an 18-7 record in singles.
Both Marija Djuran and Carrie True finished the tournament 4-0 in singles while Erin Fulkerson went 3-1.
Some of Djuran’s largest wins came against Michelle Liew of APSU 10-1 and Southern Indiana’s Reilly Ackerman 10-1. No opponent of Djuran’s recorded over five games against the junior from Belgrade, Serbia.
True allowed only seven games to opponents, winning in deciding fashion against all four foes. Her biggest victories came over Jennie LaBonte of USI 10-1 and APSU’s Brittany Hays.
Fulkerson won her first two matches, winning each 10-1, before dropping one match to Mariana Pagan of APSU 10-3. She rebounded to collect a victory in her final match against Akerman, 10-2.
Brittany Waiz won two of her three matches beating APSU’s Alex Pyle and Laura Gonzalez 10-5, 10-6. Leanne Caplinger beat Hays and Pyle to go 2-1 as well.
Allison Oberle finished 2-2 for the event. She beat both Emily Schum, 10-4 and Mary Johnson, 10-6 of USI.
Frances Trigg won her first match of the event, 10-1 over USI’s Sam Hines before losing her next two. She was defeated by Mary Lefler 11-10 in a tie-break.
The Lady Toppers will have a month off before traveling to Memphis for the Memphis Invitational at the end of October.
