Lexington, Ky. - Freshman Robby Shaw and senior Jared Topmiller posted top-25 finishes to lead the Western Kentucky University men's golf team to a share of ninth place this weekend at the Johnny Owens Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky.
The Hilltoppers fired a 932 over the course of the event, tying with Ball State for ninth out of the 15-team field played in Lexington, Ky.
Shaw led the Hilltoppers with a three-day total of 228, with a low round of 73, to tie for 13th place. Topmiller finished three strokes back of Shaw with a 231, including a 72 in the second round, to grab a share of 22nd place. Senior Adam Cox followed with a three-day total of 236 to tie for 39th.
The Hilltoppers finished 29 strokes back of tournament champion Vanderbilt, which led all teams with a 903 total. Indiana's Heath Peters captured medalist honors after carding a four-over par 220 for the event. The Hoosiers placed second followed by tournament-host Kentucky in third.
WKU returns to action April 7-8 when they travel to Branson, Mo. to play in the Branson Creek Invitational.
