Bowling Green, Ky. - Jason Dugas's (Fr., Southlake, Texas) breakway goal in overtime propelled the Western Kentucky men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Belmont Tuesday night at the Creason Soccer Complex.
Dugas, whose score was set up by a perfect pass from Richard Mupfedze (Fr., Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), streaked behind the Belmont defense and fired a rocket into the back right corner for his second goal of the season and his first career game-winner.
"Richie played a fantastic ball," Dugas said afterwards. "I had to put it away for the team."
"The spirt of these guys is incredible," Western head coach David Holmes added. "They weren't going to walk off this field without a 'W'."
Western (2-0-0) struck first in the eleventh minute of the game when Steven Medlock (Fr., Germantown, Tenn.) knocked home a deflection from teammate Ben Buerger's (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) free-kick. It was Medlock's first career goal and Buerger's first assist of the season. The Hilltoppers led 1-0 at intermission.
Belmont (0-2-0) came out smoking in the second half and took a 2-1 advantage after two consecutive goals by Keith Jacobs (49th minute) and Carey Alexander (59th). The Hilltoppers tied the score 2-2 in the 66th minute on a goal by Justin Goodman (So., Russellville, Ark.) who was assisted by Austin Oyler (Fr., Germantown, Tenn.). The teams would not score again in regulation.
Goalie Daryl Sattler (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) notched four saves for the Hilltoppers and improved his record to 2-0 on the season. Matt Renfrow (0-2) saved eight shots but took the loss for Belmont.
Western travels to Louisville this weekend to play in the Louisville Seelback Classic. The Hilltoppers play UNC-Asheville at 5 p.m. (CDT) on Friday.
