Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky Men's soccer team lost its first home game of the season, losing to Memphis 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the WKU Soccer Complex. The game was a make-up of Friday night's game that was re-scheduled due to wet field conditions. Western had not played a home game since September 3 when it defeated Belmont 3-2.
"I knew this was going to be a tough strectch for us," head coach David Holmes commented after the game. "We ran up against a tactic (Memphis's offsides trap) we had not seen before. We created a lot of scoring chances but we couldn't cash in on them...That was pretty much the story of the game."
The Hilltoppers fell behind early as the Tigers opened the game with two goals in the first 10 minutes. Memphis's Daniel Ronan opened the scoring with his first of two goals on the day in the fifth minute of regulation when he scored off a long pass from goalie Clark Talley. Memphis's Dusty Brezvosky pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 10th minute when he scored off a deflection in front of the Hilltopper's goal. Matt Bryant made it 3-0 at halftime when he scored off Justin Dyer's blocked shot in the 24th minute of regulation. The Hilltoppers had two goals wiped out in the half because of offsides penalties. For the half, Western outshot Memphis 10-8 but was called offsides eight times.
In the second half, Ronan added his second goal of the day in the 64th minute to complete the scoring. Dayton O'Brien assisted on the play. Memphis outshot Western 13-9 in the second half to take the advantage for the game, 21-19. Talley was credited with the shutout and recorded two saves for the Tigers. Hilltopper goalie Daryl Satler (Cordova, Tenn.) (5-3-1) took the loss but managed nine saves.
