Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky Men's Soccer team got back to its winning ways on Sunday, defeating Lipscomb University 4-2 at the WKU Soccer Complex in Bowling Green, Ky. Western (6-3-1), who trailed for a good portion of the game, scored two goals in the final five minutes to seal the victory.
In the 85th minute and the score tied 2-2, Hilltopper forward Jason Dugas (Southlake, Texas) broke away from the Bison defense and fired a shot past goalie J.D. Murphy to put Western up for good, 3-2. The goal was Dugas's fourth of his career. Dugas then found a streaking Edis Kavazovic (Bowling Green, Ky.) minutes later for the game's final score. The goal was Kavazovic's second of the season.
Western fell behind early for the second straight game when Lipscomb's (1-8-1) Markus Zobec scored the game's first goal only six minutes into the contest. Western's Brandon Bailey (Coppell, Texas) tied the score when he scored his second goal of the season at the 20-minute mark. Jacob Isenhour (Lexington, Ky.) assisted on the play. Lipscomb quickly regained the lead when Scott Mason scored off a free kick just in front of the Hilltopper goal. The score gave Lipscomb a 2-1 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, Western evened the score at 2-2 when David Babula (Germantown, Tenn.) scored his first goal of the season on a spectactular double-header off a throw in. Scott DeGaris (Louisville, Ky.) imbounded the ball from the far sideline to a leaping Richard Mupfudze (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) who then headed the ball to Babula who headed home the shot for his first goal of the season. The teams would did not score again until Dugas's late-game heroics.
For the game, Western outshot Lipscomb 25-13. Daryl Satler (Cordova, Tenn.) picked up the win in goal and improved his record to 6-3-1 on the season. Murphy (1-8-1) picked up the loss for Lipscomb.
Western opens Missouri Valley Conference play at home Friday night against Southern Illinois. Match time is set for 5:00 p.m. (CDT).
