Bowling Green, Ky. - Allison Nellis's (So, Louisville Ky.) goal in the 79th minute of regulation propelled the Western Kentucky women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over conference foe Arkansas Little Rock (4-8-0, 0-4) Saturday night in Bowling Green, Ky. The win marked back-to-back shutouts for the Lady Toppers (7-3-0, 2-0), who have now won four games in a row and are tied for first place in the Sun Belt Conference.
"This was a great weekend for us," head coach Jason Neidell said afterwards. "We played two teams that are much improved from last year...to not give up a goal this weekend says a lot about our defense."
The game was a defensive struggle for most of the night with neither team creating many scoring opportunities. Western controlled the ball for the most part and outshot the Indians 11-5 in the first half but couldn't find the net. The second half was much like the first until Kelly Frericks (So., Bowling Green, Ky.) found a streaking Nellis down the left side of the field late in the second half. Nellis dribbled past an Indian defender and fired a shot past goalie Marsha Stewart for the game-winning goal, her team-leading seventh of the season.
For the game, Western outshot Arkansas-Little Rock 20-8. Amy Uhlman (Louisville, Ky.) recorded her third shutout of the season and saved all four shots that came her way.
Western continues conference play Friday night on the road against North Texas in Denton, Texas. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m (CDT).
