Bowling Green, Ky. - Kelly Frericks's (Bowling Green, Ky.) goal in the 24th minute of the first half was all the Western Kentucky women's soccer team needed in their conference opener as the Lady Toppers shutout Arkansas State (2-9, 0-1) 1-0 Friday night at the WKU Soccer Complex.
Frericks scored off Crystal Chapon's (North Potomac, Md.) corner kick for the game's only score. The Lady Toppers (6-3-0, 1-0) put forth a stellar defensive effort spearheaded by midfielder Andrea Doogs (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and goalie Amy Uhlman (Louisville, Ky.). Uhlman saved eight shots on the night for the Lady Toppers.
"I thought Andrea Doogs stepped up big tonight," head coach Jason Neidell said after the game. "She won 90 percent of the balls at midfield...The Sun Belt Conference is getting better and better. Arkansas State proved tonight they're a great team."
Western returns to action tomorrow night against conference foe Arkansas Little-Rock. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. (CDT).
