Denver, Colo. - The Western Kentucky women's soccer team lost its first conference game of the season Sunday afternoon against host Denver, 5-1. The loss ends a five-game winning streak for the Lady Toppers (8-4-0, 3-1) who had won their first three Sun Belt Conference matches this season.
Denver (10-1-2, 5-0), who is ranked 16th in the country, scored all five of its goals in the first half. Lauren Sutton scored her first of two goals of the afternoon at the 18:17 mark to make the score 1-0. Jamie Norwood countered with a goal in the 29th minute to make it 2-0. Sutton scored her second goal four minutes later to make it 3-0. Kristin Warren (38:08) and Katie Antongivoanni (41:40) closed out the scoring. The last two goals were assisted by Norwood. Neither team scored in the second half.
For the game, Denver outshot the Western 28-1. Erica Izard picked up the win in goal for Denver. Melissa Bailey (Jr., Bowling Green, Ky.), who saved four shots on the afternoon, suffered her first loss of the season for the Lady Toppers.
Western returns to action Friday afternoon against Middle Tennesee St. in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Match time is set for 4:00 PM (CDT).
