Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky Athletics Director Dr. Wood Selig has announced that the school has come to terms on a long-term contract with head women's basketball coach Shawn Campbell. The four-year deal keeps Campbell on the sidelines at WKU through June 30, 2005, with a one-year extension clause that can be exercised by the University after this season.
"I'm very happy to have worked out the terms of this deal," said Campbell. "I'm extremely excited to take on the responsibility of rebuilding this program and continuing the success it has had both on and off the court for the next four or five years, and beyond. Our staff will work very hard not only for the athletic department and Western Kentucky University, but also for the entire Bowling Green community."
The comprehensive package is worth over $120,000 per year. That amount does not include the bonus incentives for academics, NCAA Tournament participation and recruiting, nor does it include revenues from summer camps. The terms also include a $170,000 buyout clause should Campbell terminate the deal. WKU will also pay Campbell $170,000 should the University terminate him without cause.
"We are very pleased to have all the details ironed out with Coach Campbell on this long-term deal," said Selig. "We feel that Coach Campbell brings tremendous qualities and assets to the Lady Topper program, and will propel the Lady Toppers back into the national spotlight."
Campbell became the 14th women's basketball coach at WKU on July 2, 2001, and has led the Lady Toppers to an 11-6 overall record, and a 5-1 Sun Belt Conference mark so far in his first season at the helm. The Lady Toppers are currently riding a four-game winning streak, and have won eight of their last 10 contests.
WKU will be on the road this weekend for two games against Sun Belt Conference East Division opponents Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday (Jan. 24) and Arkansas State on Saturday (Jan. 26).
