Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky men's golfer Jared Topmiller (So., Central City, Ky.) began the 2000 fall season by winning the individual championship at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate, taking the event in a playoff with Wyoming's David Hearn, the defending tournament champion.
Topmiller, playing in only his third collegiate event, recorded a career-low score of 68 in the opening round. He followed that with scores of 69 and 70 in the final two rounds of the tournament. In the 1999 Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate, his collegiate debut, Topmiller turned in scores of 71, 71, 73 to finish tied for 24th.
Coach Brian Tirpak's Hilltoppers finished the tournament fifth of 12 teams with a 54-hole score of 873. Wyoming, the tournament host, won the event for the second straight year with an 848. Individually for WKU, Eric Mason (Jr., Booneville, Ky.) was the second highest finisher tying for 14th with a 219. John Mullendore (So., Bowling Green, Ky.) finished tied for 25th with a 222, Adam Cox (So., Hardinsburg, Ky.) shot a 227 to tie for 44th and Chris Cassell (Sr. Terre Haute, Ind.) finished tied for 58th with a 236.
Western will return to action Sept. 23-24 traveling to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational.
