Staymon Johnson joined the WKU Football staff prior to the 2024 season. The 2025 season will be his second season with the Hilltoppers. Johnson is a Graduate Assistant, working primarily with the team's linebackers.
In 2024, during his first season with the program, Johnson helped coach the Hilltoppers to berths in the Conference USA Championship Game and the Boca Raton Bowl. The Hilltopper defense was fourth in CUSA in scoring defense in 2024, allowing an average of 24.6 points per game, and ranked third in the category against league opponents during the regular season at just 20.1 points allowed through those eight games. The Hilltoppers finished second in the league in pass defense last season by allowing just 176.1 yards per game, and held opponents under 100 yards passing four times during the regular season. The Hilltoppers were third in the league in turnovers gained in 2024.
Johnson helped coach linebacker Darius Thomas to All-Conference USA Honorable Mention Honors in the 2024 season. Linebacker Lofton Howard was named to the 2024 CUSA All-Freshman Team.
He spent the 2023 season at Dayton coaching defensive ends. Prior to Dayton, Johnson was at Wofford, where he was a Defensive Quality Control Coach and assisted with the defensive line.
Johnson is a native of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, and a graduate of Emory & Henry University, earning his degree in Mathematics Secondary Education in 2020. He played linebacker for four seasons there, and was a four-time member of the ODAC All-Academic Team. He was also named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society.
