James Russell Smothermon joined the WKU Athletic Training staff full time in January of 2017 and was responsible for the track & field and cross country teams from 2017-18 before transitioning into the role of assistant athletic trainer for football in 2018. He previously served as an intern athletic trainer for the WKU football team during the 2015 and 2016 football seasons. Smothermon and his wife, the former Rachel Rhodes, are originally from Eddyville, Kentucky. They currently reside in Bowling Green.
Prior to his time at WKU, Smothermon served as a graduate assistant for the football, golf and baseball teams at Marshall while earning a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training. While earning his Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Athletic Training at Georgetown College, he completed clinical rotations with most collegiate sports at Georgetown along with a semester at Kentucky State University and Scott County High School.
