Nick Locher serves in a quality control role on defense at WKU, working primarily with the secondary. It is his fourth overall season with the Hilltoppers, having previous roles as a graduate assistant coach during the 2020 season, a volunteer coach in 2018 and an equipment manager in 2017.
In 2020, Locher worked primarily with the safeties under assistant coach Andy LaRussa. That season, WKU ranked eighth in FBS in pass yards allowed (177.3), 28th in total yards allowed (348.7) and 41st in points allowed (25.3) per game. The Hilltoppers also finished third in the nation with 68 pass breakups. At the conclusion of the season, five WKU defensive backs earned All-CUSA honors.
During games, Locher worked directly with defensive coordinator Clayton White as a primary signaler on the sidelines. Throughout the week, led position meetings, constructed weekly game plans, identified top route concepts, provided the defensive backs with breakdowns of opposing receivers. He also led all scout team looks for special teams and coached wide receivers for the scout team offense.
Locher spent the 2019 year at Owensboro High School, where he was the head coach for the Red Devils’ freshman team, leading the squad to an 8-1 record while outscoring opponents 293-to-71 overall. He also served as running backs coach for the varsity team that went 12-2 and reached the state semifinals, while also working as special teams coordinator for the junior varsity team that went 7-0.
Locher earned an undergraduate degree in Recreation Administration from WKU and is currently working towards a graduate degree in Physical Education in the M.A.T. program for initial certification. Originally from Owensboro, Ky., he went to Owensboro High School.
