Before WKU: Boyd played two seasons at Mt. San Antonio College prior to his arrival at WKU. There, he added depth to the team's running backs room and served as a kick returner. He tallied 144 yards on 31 carries in nine games as a sophomore for the Mounties and 27 yards on a pair of receptions, as well as 697 yards and two touchdowns on 16 kick returns – a 43.6 yards average – while helping the team to a 12-1 record. He was named a First Team SCFA National Division Central League kick returner
