A member of WKU's athletic department since July 2009, Michael Schroeder was elevated to his current role of Associate Athletic Director for Communications in August 2015.
Schroeder is tasked with overseeing the entire Athletic Communications/Media Relations department at WKU and assisting with strategic planning for the athletic department, and he is the media relations contact for the nationally-recognized Hilltopper men's basketball team.
Schroeder has worked to streamline the efficiency of the department's operations, and he has also taken on projects such as the athletic department annual report, the "25 Days of Triumph" men's basketball documentary and the department website redesign, while working with the marketing, development and ticket departments on various items. Schroeder has also been successful in creating two additional media relations positions at WKU, as well as adding a staff photographer position.
He also oversaw WKU's transition to and partnership with ESPN for its men's and women's basketball broadcasts, which resulted in 19 men's basketball and six women's basketball games being broadcast nationally on ESPN3 and ESPN Full Court in its first year in 2012-13. Schroeder oversaw WKU's move to Conference USA in 2014-15 from a media relations standpoint, which included transitioning to television partnerships with Fox Sports Media Group and CBS Sports Network.
Schroeder's primary tasks with men's basketball include overseeing all media coverage of the team, running in-game media operations, handling social media and maintaining statistics, records and WKUSports.com. Schroeder has facilitated the team through NCAA Tournament trips in 2012 and 2013.
Schroeder came to WKU as an athletic media relations assistant in July 2009 after graduating from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in broadcast journalism in May 2009. He worked as the primary media relations contact for the WKU women's soccer and baseball teams in 2009-10 before being promoted to Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations in August 2010 and taking over men's basketball duties.
He was elevated to Director of Athletic Communications in June 2012 and then Assistant Athletic Director for Communications in August 2013.
While at Illinois, Schroeder earned four letters as the baseball team manager. His previous media relations experience came at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in his hometown of Bloomington, Ill., and with the Madison Mallards Baseball Club in Madison, Wisc.
Schroeder completed his master's degree in athletic administration at WKU in August 2012.
He resides in Bowling Green.
