BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Mahurin Family Foundation Head Coach Hank Plona announced the signing of rising junior Sharron Young to the 2026-27 roster.
"Sharron is going to be an impact point guard from day one." Plona said. "We were looking for a champion and we got one. He's won three state titles in high school, played in two NCAA Tournaments and wants more. Sharron makes us better and we can't wait to coach him."
The former West Virginia Player of the Year comes to The Hill after playing two years at Akron.
Young played a key role in Akron's back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2024-25 and 2025-26.
The Morgantown, West Virginia, native appeared in 34 games for the Zips in 2025-26, starting in 12 games. He averaged 7.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game while netting 42 3-pointers across the year. He led the MAC with a 4.2% steal percentage in conference play.
He scored in double figures 10 times, including a 20-point game on 6-of-8 shooting off the bench in a win against Murray State. He also scored 19 points on 7-of-9 from the field off the bench in a road win at Kent State.
As a freshman, Young appeared in 35 games, averaging 7.4 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game, earning All-MAC Freshman Team honors. He scored in double figures 12 times, including a season-high 18 points in a win over Ball State. He also contributed five boards, four assists and two steals in 24 minutes as the Zips claimed an 81-73 win over the Cardinals.
In high school, Young led his Morgantown High School team to three consecutive AAAA State Championships. In his senior season, he guided his team to a 26-1 record and state championship while being named state tournament MVP. Young capped his historic high school career by being named the 2023-24 Gatorade West Virginia Player of the Year, becoming the first player from Morgantown to earn the honor.
