A couple Tops in the Pros met on opposite sides of the net last week as the Professional Volleyball Federation's Columbus Fury and Grand Rapids Rise faced off for the third time this season.
Kaylee Cox ('24) and the Columbus Fury defeated the Grand Rapids Rise in a five-set thriller on Feb. 20 in Van Andel Arena. Paige Briggs-Romine ('23) was a crucial component to generating the Rise's offense, but the Fury outlasted the test and improved to 2-1 on the series this season.
Cox played in all five sets for the Fury. The utility player out of Flower Mound, Texas totaled 13 kills, 17 digs, two assists and one block. Cox is a reliable go-hitter for the Fury, marking 13 kills on 34 attempts (.380).
Briggs-Romine started in every set for the Rise, making consistent plays for her team during the back-and-forth play and trading set wins with the Fury. The six-rotation outside hitter totaled 13 kills, nine digs, two blocks and one ace. Her .310 kill percentage is what made the Rise continue feeding her, marking 42 attack attempts - the second most attempts on the night, helping them succeed in the two matches they claimed.
The Fury and Rise will meet for the fourth and final time on Friday, March 28 in Van Andel Arena, deciding whether or not the Fury will win or tie the series against the Rise.
