DALLAS, Texas – Conference USA announced its Week 6 Players of the Week on Monday, with two Hilltoppers earning the honor.
Freshman outside hitter Sonja Laaksonen was named Freshman of the Week for the first time this season, while redshirt senior setter Callie Bauer earned Setter of the Week honors for the third time this season.
Laaksonen and Bauer's awards brings WKU Volleyball's CUSA Player of the Week awards to eight on the season.
Bauer finished the weekend with 75 assists and averaged 10.71 assists per set. Her work as WKU's setter also helped the Hilltoppers to a .382 hitting percentage and a season-best .581 single-set hitting percentage in set two of Saturday's match. Bauer's leadership has WKU ranked first in conference in assists per set (13.15) and is ranked first in conference in kills per set (15.15). As an individual, she's currently ranked second in conference in assists per set with 9.02.
Laaksonen earned her first Freshman of the Week honors after appearing in all seven sets and producing a total of 18 kills. Her 2.57 kills per set average was fourth best over the weekend and her hitting percentage of .447 was the second highest amongst the team. She posted nine kills across both matches and collected a total of four blocks at the net including two solo efforts.
WKU Volleyball continues conference play with two matches at Louisiana Tech, Oct. 10-11. First serve on Oct. 10 is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
